In 2009, Tecmo merged with Koei to form the holding company Tecmo Koei Holdings. In April 2010, Tecmo was dissolved and its video game franchises are now published by Tecmo Koei Games.

Nel marzo 1981 venne fondata la divisione statunitense U.S. Tehkan, Inc., e in seguito ci fu la prima pubblicazione nel campo videoludico, nell'aprile dello stesso anno, con il videogioco Pleiads, pubblicato dalla Centuri in arcade. Negli anni seguiti pubblicarono diversi giochi, come Bomb Jack e Tehkan World Cup, e l'8 gennaio 1986 la Tehkan cambiò il proprio nome in Tecmo. Il 28 agosto 2008 la Square Enix (azienda famosa per la serie Final Fantasy) si dichiara interessata a comprare la Tecmo, ma il 4 settembre la Tecmo rifiuta ufficialmente. Dopo diversi contatti con la Koei, il 26 gennaio 2009 le due annunciano un fusione, ufficializzata il 1° aprile con la creazione della Koei Tecmo Holdings.
