Brigade 055 was an elite Muslim terrorist force funded by Osama bin Laden which operated in Afghanistan in support of the Taliban. It was recruited from veterans of the U.S. supported fight against Soviet occupiers of Afganistan in the 1980s. In the 1990s the Brigade sent men to Chechnya to battle Russian forces. Members of Al Qaeda and of Brigade 055 were trained in chemical weapons in a secret Chechen stronghold in the Pankisi gorge. Brigade 055 carried out many atrocities against Russian targets. The Brigade suffered heavy losses fighting against U.S. forces in Afghanistan in 2001. Survivors fled into Pakistan.[1]
