Mr. Hauser was a history teacher at Junipero Middle School, and had been there since the 1970s. In 2013, he arranged to have his eighth-grade history class go to the Hebrew Home for the Aging to meet with Anne Berkowitz, an elderly woman who'd survived the Holocaust as a young girl by hiding in a secret room in Amsterdam between 1942 and 1945. Mr. Hauser helped direct the discussion, asking Anne a variety of questions designed to give illuminating answers to the students. Some of these questions seemed rather foolish to Anne at first, but she quickly realized that they had a specific purpose.
