However, a few nights later, Pure Ones killed Grettir and Lygeia, but before they could kill Shard, a group of Guardians arrived and saved him and took him to the Great Ga'Hoole Tree where they raised him. Many years later, Shard is now a young guardian and "nightdreams" about repealing a invasion on the Great Tree with the guardian Allomere before being knocked back to his senses by his fellow guardian Parzival. Shard then confessed to Allomere that he was daydreaming. Parzival says that Shard is as useless as Grettir, to which Shard tackles him before Ezylryb arrives and gives them flint mops to light torches. Ezylryb then sends Shard and Parzival to deal with a pack of crows who have blockaded a group of guardians. After the two kill the crows, a young barn owl named Soren and other owls are brought to the Great Tree where Soren tells the Guardians that he was captured by the Pure Ones but escaped and also says that the Pure Ones have been moonblinking owlets and forcing them to mine for flecks. This news makes the tree's monarchs Boron and Barran send Allomere and search and rescue guardians to the Pure Ones's base St. Aegolius. While this is happening Ezylryb sends Shard and Parzival to look for an eagle named Streak who was captured by bats. The two travel to the Desert of Kuneer and find Streak and battle a large group of bats before freeing the eagle. Streak thanks the two and decides to help them take down the bats. Later, during the battle of the Guardians and the Pure Ones, Shard encounters Allomere and discovers that he was responsible for his parents deaths. The two later battled at caverns where Shard crashed Allomere into rock formation and Allomere attempted to attack Shard, but his collision caused rocks to fall on him and crush him to death. After the Pure Ones were defeated, Shard, Parzival, Ezylryb and the other Guardians returned to the Great Ga'Hoole Tree.
