  • Steven Valentine Patrick William "Steve" Allen (December 26, 1921 – October 30, 2000) was an American television personality, mostly famous for being the very first host of NBC's The Tonight Show. He appeared on The Simpsons as the "electronically altered" voice of Bart Simpson in "Separate Vocations" and guest starred as himself in "'Round Springfield". He died on October 30, 2000 at age 78.

Though he got his start in radio, Allen is best-known for his television career. He first gained national attention as a guest host on Arthur Godfrey's Talent Scouts. He graduated to become the first host of The Tonight Show, where he was instrumental in innovating the concept if the television talk show. Thereafter, he hosted numerous game and variety shows, including: The Steve Allen Show, I've Got a Secret, The New Steve Allen Show and was a regular panel member on What's My Line?.
  • In 1955, Sam and Friends was scheduled twice a day on the local Washington, DC network, at 6:25 and 11:25pm. The 6:25 show led into the national Huntley-Brinkley Report broadcast at 6:30, and the 11:25 show came before Tonight!’s start at 11:30. Jane Henson credits this scheduling as key to the early success of Sam and Friends: "We were handed the best possible audiences," she remembered in Jim Henson: The Works. "Everyone followed Huntley-Brinkley, and Steve Allen was extremely popular as well. It was an incredible break, and I never did know who was responsible for it."

Allen also appeared in the 1979 special The Muppets Go Hollywood, as a guest at the Muppets' party. In 1981, a PBS pledge season special entitled Something Spectacular with Steve Allen featured the American television debut of four UK spots from The Muppet Show: Danny Boy, I'm So Happy, How High the Moon, and Alley Oop. The end credits contained a special acknowledgment for Jim Henson and ITC.

Allen won a Grammy award in 1963 for best jazz composer with his song The Gravy Waltz. Allen wrote more than 50 books, has two stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame and a Hollywood theatre named in his honor.
