Deshayesitidae are typically compressed, high whorled ammonites from the upper part of the Lower Cretaceous with strong branching or long and short ribs that may cross the venter. Tubercles are rare. Suture tends to simplify with shallow rounded elements. Possibly derived from Callizoniceras. Includes, according to the Treatise, 1957, Deshayesites, Dufrenoya, Burckhardites, and Cloioceras. Newer classificaions divide the Deshayesitidae into subfamilies, including the Acanthohoplitinae, reassigned from the Douvilleiceratidae, along with such as the Deshayesitinae and Mathoceratinae.
