His unbridled jealousy of Hiruzen Sarutobi, caused Danzo to do despicable acts in pursuit the position of Hokage, Danzo's militant and archaic views made him a danger to the village he professed to love and protect as he created the hatred in some of Kohona's greatest attackers, and major villains - Kabuto Yakushi, Pain and Sasuke Uchiha due to his harsh, cruel indifference to human suffering. - Danzō Shimura (志村ダンゾウ, Shimura Danzō), also known as The Darkness of the Shinobi (忍の闇, Shinobi no Yami) was an elder of Konohagakure and the leader and founder of Root. Despite his frequent unsanctioned and questionable actions, he only ever worked in pursuit of what he saw as Konoha's best interests. He was appointed the Sixth Hokage Candidate (六代目火影候補, Rokudaime Hokage Koho) after Pain's attack on the village, shortly before his death.
- Danzō Shimura (志村ダンゾウ, Shimura Danzō) is a young Jōnin, as well as a teammate to Kagami Uchiha and Torifu Akimichi. He is the rival of Hiruzen Sarutobi, whom he later states is "Inferior" as a Hokage.
- With Hiruzen having beaten him to the title of Hokage, Danzō began planning to someday attain the title himself. Taking up the village's more clandestine operations — something that Hiruzen noted because of his own indulgence, he allowed Danzō to do — he created the Anbu subsidiary named Root, with the organisation under Danzō's direct command. Within this group, Danzō himself hand-picked various young shinobi with noticeable potential to join.
