| - Vaniel was the high king of Irollan from 566 to 756 YSD. He inherited the throne when Brythigga, the Mother of Trees, was burned and High King Arniel slain during the Day of the Tears of Fire. The dark elves were blamed for the misdeed, but in a gesture of mercy, Vaniel offered Tuidhana and her followers safe passage out of Irollan. For one week, he promised to hold his armies back, but after that, he would cross the border into her kingdom and slay anyone that remained. Tuidhana urged her people to leave, telling her children to lead them away, but she herself remained with a handful of followers to stand against Vaniel. Tuidhana died defending her lands. In 585 YSD, Vaniel discovered that the attack on Brythigga and Arniel had actually been carried out by the demons of Sheogh, not the dark elves. He sent emissaries to apologize to the wandering dark elves, offering them amnesty and a chance to return home, but they unanimously refused. At one point, Vaniel was approached by Sephinroth, who claimed to be Arniel's illegitimate daughter. She hoped to secure herself a place in his court, and even tried to persuade him to marry her, telling him it would pacify his divided nation. A slip of the tongue caused her deception to crumble, and she had to flee Irollan, ending up amongst the dark elves. Vaniel passed away in 756, and was succeeded by Alaron, who turned away from the forest to re-establish stronger ties with other nations. Syris Vaniel, one of the elves' seasonal capitals, was named after him.
