Mavros was a young man who was member of a noble Videssian family near Opsikion; he was the son of Tanilis. He met Krispos in a temple in Opsikion with his mother, and ultimately became friends and then a foster brother. When Krispos became avtokrator, Mavros was selected to be his sevastos. Even with civil war and barbarian raids threatened the land, Tanilis had requested that Krispos keep her son out of trouble. Mavros ignored Krispos and Tanilis' request and led an army against Harvas Black-Robe, where he was killed in battle.
