| - Atlantis Diesel Engines, or ADE, is an engine manufacturer based in Atlantis, Western Cape, South Africa. Founded in 1979 by the South African government through the Industrial Development Corporation (IDC), for the purpose of establishing South African diesel engine production against a background of the threat of trade sanctions against the country due to it's apartheid policies. The purpose was to provide security of supply of diesel engines for both military and civilian (automotive, agricultural and industrial) requirements. It was licensed by Mercedes-Benz and Perkins. The viability of the company was ensured by legislation that imposed onerous penalties on any automotive and agricultural equipment using imported engines. The forced use of these engines met significant resistance amongst users, however, high quality standards were achieved and maintained. The real cost of the introduction of the engines was significantly affected by the comparatively low deletion allowance overseas manufacturers allowed for the deletion of the original engines from their products. Nevertheless, the keen competition in the now common parts market for spares for these engines made these engines very cheap to maintain. Technical installation prerequisites for warranty maintenance were strictly enforced, guaranteeing installations suited to local conditions. Atlantis Diesel Engines were used in local production of trucks and tractors, including Mercedes-Benz, Toyota, Nissan, Delta (Izuzu), MAN, ERF, AAD, Truckmakers, ACO, Agrico, Bell, Massey Ferguson, John Deere, etc... After the 1994 democratic elections the company was closed, only to be reopened again in by the current shareholders and the License Agreement with Daimler was terminated.
