He played for the junior Calgary Centennials and was drafted 42nd overall by the Chicago Blackhawks in the 1970 NHL Amateur Draft. After two years with the Dallas Black Hawks Fris made a satisfactory debut with Chicago in the 1973 Stanley Cup Final. He played in 1973-74 for Chicago and then was traded to the Oakland Seals for Ivan Boldirev. After three seasons as a solid regular with the Seals and their successor team the Cleveland Barons (NHL) Frig was again traded to the St. Louis Blues in 1977. He never made the Blues and finished off his career with the Salt Lake Golden Eagles in 1981.
