A middle-aged man with a thick head of medium-length ash-gray hair, perpetually calm brown eyes, and cheeks ruddy from years under the sun, his compact and powerful build evinces the sheer strength of both his body and his personality. He was one of the leaders of the wandering party that became half of the Thousand Hands Convoy; it was his brother's ship whose mast became a tree, and he led the party that greeted the goddess who made it.

His inquisitive nature and his Exaltation (the former more than the latter, to everyone's surprise) brought him to Fern's lasting notice. While she was arranging appropriate political and social structures for the Hands, she offered him the chance to study with her; he accepted immediately. He is married; he and his wife, Swallow Treads the Sunrise, have three children, all in their early twenties.
