  • This isn't just for me, this is for the whole Marvel Fanon community. To see what would've happen to your characters if they did something different. Like if "What If... The Shield Avengers were Villians?" or "What If... The Zoologist never got his Powers?", you know stuff like that. So please enjoy. And when you are putting up what ifs, please make your own section so that you could tell which comic is yours. Thanks.

  • Fifteen years ago, Ben Walker (Kevin Sorbo) decided to leave his college sweetheart Wendy (Kristy Swanson), and ultimately his faith, in order to pursue a lucrative business opportunity (graduating top of his class from Harvard Business School instead of receiving a doctorate in Theology with a minor in Biblical Archaeology). In the present, Ben has become a financial wizard as the head of his company, and has just proposed marriage to a pretty yet materialistic fiancée. When his car breaks down on the way to the airport, he is visited by a gruff yet angelic mechanic (John Ratzenberger), who tells him that he needs to see what his life would have been like had he followed God’s calling. Suddenly, Ben finds himself in an alternate reality married to Wendy with two daughters - rebellious teen Kimberly (Debby Ryan), and Kimberly's little sister, Megan (portrayed by newcomer Taylor Groothuis) - getting ready for church on a Sunday morning, where he’s scheduled to give his first sermon as the new pastor. The mechanic explains that this is an experience God has put in place to show Ben what would have happened if he'd accepted his other calling, the great "What If". If Ben wants to get back to his old life, he must first learn to appreciate the value of faith and family, and perhaps rediscover the love of his life. In the tradition of It's a Wonderful Life and The Family Man, What If... tells the story of a man whose glimpse into what he’s missing reminds him of what he truly wants.

Designed to raise awareness of issues, it presented questions such as "What if the next WPI president was a woman?" and "What if the only place of worship was a mosque?" These questions were (for the first few) accompanied by a poll on myWPI with preset responses. Results of the polls were then published in Tech News. The campaign drew criticism from several quarters. Minority students accused it of trivializing legitimate issues. Other students said the poll responses were clearly biased in favor of certain replies, accusing the poll of using "pseudo-science for political gain." Others questioned the statistical validity, saying that such poor math reflected badly of a technical school. Some responded by lampooning it. Fake questions such as "What if dinosaurs roamed the earth?" appeared on posters around campus. Tech News published a "Person on the Street" that gave a number of silly replies. And even the Class of 2004 Peddler featured an extensive parody. The Community Council and the Office of Diversity Programs (formerly Office of Diversity and Women's Programs) continued to assert the positive effects of the campaign. To its credit, the "What if?" campaign was effective at being noticed and stimulated the debate. However, much of the debate was in the design and implementation, not over the content specifically.
