Octavarium is the eighth studio album by American progressive metal/rock band Dream Theater. Released on June 7, 2005, it was the band's final release with Atlantic Records. Recorded between September 2004 and February 2005, the album holds the distinction of being the last album ever recorded at The Hit Factory in New York City. With Octavarium, the band decided to create "a classic Dream Theater album", drawing upon their various stylistic influences while trying to make the music less complex. The album takes as its creative concept the musical octave.

| - Four grey balls make up half of a giant Newton's Cradle. The ball on the right is midway through a swing and has the Majesty symbol on it. The word "Octavarium" is written under this ball. Two birds fly above the stationary balls. The background is a set of green hills with a blue, partially cloudy sky. Along the bottom of the image is a dark strip with "Dream Theater" written in the traditional Dream Theater font to the right. The front of the jacket reveals a full Newton's Cradle with 8 balls. This physics toy always repeats the same motion over and over again, emphasizing this album's theme. There are also 5 birds in the picture, forming a piano octave - the balls being the white keys and the birds being the black keys. This theme of octaves and moving in circles is continued throughout the entire album. On the back of the jacket, you'll see part of a piano. Note that each octave on a piano has 8 white keys and 5 black keys. Each white key represents a song off the album - in order, starting with F. In fact, these notes are the minors of the key the song is in.
If you look carefully you'll see that the track times on the back of the CD appear to be incorrect. They only add up to 73:26, when any CD player will tell you that the CD is 75:55. Interestingly enough, 5 of the tracks have negative time that makes up the missing 2:18. Not only do each of these negative time tracks represent the accidental, but they are also in the key of the relative minor of the accidental.

Octavarium peaked in the top five in the Finnish, Italian, and Swedish charts, and in the top ten in the Dutch, Japanese, and Norwegian charts. Critical reception of the album was generally positive; the diversity of the music was praised, although critics found some of the songwriting to be inconsistent. Dream Theater promoted the album on a year-long world tour, with the majority of concerts lasting almost three hours and featuring a different setlist each night. The tour finished at Radio City Music Hall accompanied by an orchestra; this performance was recorded and released as a live album and concert video entitled Score. They co-headlined the 2005 North American Gigantour with Megadeth.
