Wands of Lightning can be used to discharge bolts of lightning, like the spell Lightning Bolt, which does also damage to allies if they cross path with the lightning bolt. The bolt does 6D6 points of damage, if a creature makes a save vs. wands, the damage is halved. This wand has a limited amount of charges and will be destroyed when it runs out. In the game of Baldur's Gate, this item is for sale at Sorcerous Sundries. In Baldur's Gate II it is dropped by the lich in the Crooked Crane Inn and by one of the thralls in the Planar Prison.

- The wand of lightning shoots shocking bolts, dealing 6d6 damage to non-shock resistant targets. The beam bounces when it hits walls or targets with reflection. It is especially annoying when monsters zap one against you. A bolt of lightning can destroy almost any ring or wand in your inventory. Even if doesn't hit and even if you have reflection, it is guaranteed to blind you for 1-50 turns up to a maximum of 127 (0-99 turns if zapping yourself, (ulevel/2+1)d50 if your own bounces). Some soldier might surprise you with a bolt that destroys your only ring of slow digestion. You might have guessed this, but one specific ring and one specific wand, the ring of shock resistance and the wand of lightning itself, are immune to this type of destruction.
- Wands of lightning are wands that, when "z"apped, fire a beam of lightning in any of the eight directions. A wand of lightning differs from a wand of ball lightning in that the player actually chooses which direction to fire the bolt. They can be zapped at the player, also. This will make them take significant damage unless they have intrinsic lightning resistance or immunity, and may cause item destruction on top of that. This wand has a range of 16/8/6 for B/U/C respectively. Additional 1 range is added for each 5 character levels.

Desirability
| - Offensive spell wands can be of great use to non-spellcasters who find their weapons ineffective, and even for spellcasters that find their current foe immune to their spells. Found in the very early game, these properties can be lifesavers.

Description
| - Wands of lightning are wands that, when "z"apped, fire a beam of lightning in any of the eight directions. A wand of lightning differs from a wand of ball lightning in that the player actually chooses which direction to fire the bolt.
They can be zapped at the player, also. This will make them take significant damage unless they have intrinsic lightning resistance or immunity, and may cause item destruction on top of that.
Caution is advised as bolts bounce off walls. It is also worth noting that if one becomes rusty, zapping it has a chance to slightly electrocute the PC — which does not deal much damage, but could cause an embarrassing death for PCs relying on one to save their life in a pinch.
This wand has a range of 16/8/6 for B/U/C respectively. Additional 1 range is added for each 5 character levels.

Some soldier might surprise you with a bolt that destroys your only ring of slow digestion. You might have guessed this, but one specific ring and one specific wand, the ring of shock resistance and the wand of lightning itself, are immune to this type of destruction. Like a wand of fire, engraving Elbereth with a wand of lightning makes a permanent E-square. This works guaranteed if you have no impairments. The only problem is that burning any text into the ground with a wand of lightning will blind you. It's less crippling, though, if you also have telepathy or a unicorn horn. However, the wand of lightning is better than the wand of fire in that it won't be destroyed by lightning bolts, which can be a factor if you lack reflection. Applying a wand of lightning deals quadruple damage to yourself and all surrounding squares. Your inventory is subject to the same effects as though you were zapped with the wand, i.e. your rings and wands may explode. Thus, it is not a very desirable way to inflict damage to monsters near you, unless you have no valuable rings or wands, or are are going to die next turn anyway. Using a wand of lightning while inside a monster (such as a vortex) will blind you, and may cause the affected monster to sub-divide.[citation needed]
