In 2000-01, the national championship contained the top teams from the Eliteserien and the 1. divisjon. Between 1997 and 2000, the winner of the Eliteserien also claimed the national championship. From 1993-1997, the 1. divisjon champion was crowned national champions. The Eliteserien was also contested in 1996-97, but only on an experimental basis.
