More than 46 countries around the world now have freedom of information laws. They span several centuries, with Sweden enacting its first access to information law in 1766. Elsewhere in Europe, Finland enacted a freedom of information law in 1951 and Ireland did so recently. Scotland has an access to information law and the Freedom of Information Act came into force in England and Wales in 2005.
