Mandabba Medhane Alem is Nea Abyssinian monastery dating from the 13th century. The monastery was founded by Saint Abba Yesaye, a follower of the legendary Iyasus Mo'a who was educated at the famed Debre Hayq Istifanos monastery. In the modern day the Mandabba monastery's landholdings are vast, and larger than most. There are around 150 resident monks.
