A structuring element is a set of values used by a structuring operation in morphological image processing. As a set of coordinate-value pairs, a structuring element is technically identical to an image, in morphological terms. In practice, when used in a structuring algorithm such as dilation or erosion, structuring elements are much smaller than the images they operate on. The pixel neighbourhood of some programmer-selected size is often used as a structuring element.
