| - thumb|Der Planet Excalbia. Excalbia ist ein vulkanaktiver Planet und die Heimatwelt der Excalbianer. Die Oberfläche des Planeten besteht zum größten Teil aus Lava und die Atmosphäre ist für Humanoide giftig. Der Planet ist einige hunderte Lichtjahre von der Erde entfernt. 2269 erforscht die USS Enterprise (NCC-1701) den Planeten, aber aufgrund der lebensfeindlichen Bedingungen geht die Crew davon aus, dass es kein Leben auf der Oberfläche gibt. Da die Oberfläche auch mit Lava überzogen ist, kann Captain James T. Kirk kein Außenteam auf die Oberfläche schicken. Plötzlich taucht eine Erscheinung von Abraham Lincoln auf und diese lädt Kirk und Spock auf die Oberfläche des Planeten ein. Zur selben Zeit wird die Planetenoberfläche transformiert, damit Humanoide den Planeten betreten können. In einer Region des Planeten entsteht eine feste Oberfläche mit einer Sauerstoff/Stickstoff Atmosphäre. Auf der Oberfläche wollen die Excalbianer, dass Kirk zusammen mit Spock, Lincoln und Surak gegen Dschingis Khan, Colonel Green, Zora und Kahless einen Kampf gut gegen böse führen. Da die Excalbianer drohen die Enterprise zu vernichten, hat Kirk keine Wahl, er muss diesen Kampf durch führen. Kirk kann mit Spock zwar den Kampf gewinnen, da aber beide Seiten ähnliche Mittel zum Kampf eingesetzt haben, können die Excalbianer keinen Unterschied zwischen den Guten und den Bösen sehen. Darauf geben die Excalbianer die Enterprise wieder frei und Kirk kehrt mit Spock auf die Enterprise zurück. (TOS: ) 2328 befindet sich auf Excalbia das Excalbia Tourist Resort. (TNG: )

In 2269, the USS Enterprise was sent to Excalbia by Starfleet to confirm several "old space legends" about the planet, which suggested that the planet was home to intelligent life. Orbital scans of Excalbia revealed several scientifically anomalous readings, including evidence of carbon cycle lifeforms on the surface, as well as indications of artificial power being generated in factor seven quantities, indicating the presence of a considerable civilization. As the Enterprise prepared to warp out of orbit, the ship was subjected to an incredibly swift deep probe from the planet. Moments later, the ship was contacted by the image of Abraham Lincoln, who eventually convinced Captain Kirk and Spock down to Excalbia's surface, where they were subjected to an Excalbian experiment on the nature of good and evil conducted by Yarnek with Kirk and Spock's unwilling participation. Yarnek recreated several historical figures thought to embody the concepts of good and evil, and pitted them in combat against each other before the Enterprise crew was allowed to depart.
