- The term pirate now refers to a much wider selection of traits, and while several groups of criminals branded as pirates do sail the Great Sea and search for treasure, other factions prefer to remain secretive, reserving piracy for the inner ranks of their organizations. Needless to say, most pirates are considered less clean than your average sailor. Synonym terms for a pirate includes: freebooter, privateer, corsair, buccaneer, raider, sea king, etc. Many pirates have the buccaneer class, although not all pirates are buccaneers.

- The term pirate referred to the variety of rogues that were scattered across The Galaxy who would attack, rob or commandeer ships in their territory. Whilst their actions were inherently illegal, the morals of various pirates varied considerably. Some were cutthroat brigands who were petty murderers or thieves, but others, such as Nym, had a set of morals that prohibited killing the innocent, and generally restricted their actions to the rich. Indeed, on a few occasions, pirates have pulled through to help the galaxy as a whole. Mostly though, they are the scourge of The Galaxy.
- Level 26 pirates can also be found during Cabin Fever. Some pirates have a talk option and respond with unintelligible pirate slang when the player speaks to them without a Book o' piracy or Rocking Out completed. A large amount of NPC pirate models have been updated on 9 November 2009. From the 18 September 2014 through to the 25 September 2014, a Treasure Hunter promotion caused pirates to potentially drop doubloons when killed.

Used efficiently, pirates can completely disrupt an enemy's naval trade and coastal industry.

- Pirates in Tropico 2: Pirate Cove do all almost no work on the island, unlike captives. Most pirate activity is spent on board ships, where they cruise in search of plunder. They require food, sleep, stashing, drinking, gambling, wenching, defense, and anarchy. Pirates not assigned to ships can instead find jobs ashore as Guards or Overseers, though these are paid poorly (though regularly) and prefer a berth on a ship. Both male and female pirates can take jobs interchangeably.
- Within the Pirates, there are two job branches: Corsairs and Buccaneers (Cannoneers are a special case that can be found on their own page). As their main weapons, Corsairs use Guns that vary in speed every 5 levels and Buccaneers use Knuckles, braces for hand-to-hand combat. Although the Corsair's gun gets relatively low hits, higher hits are more consistently achievable when attacking monsters close to the Pirate's level while using the skill Bullet Time. - Pirates were somewhat common along the Rokugani coast, especially in the lucrative Crane and Mantis shipping lanes. Most pirates tended to be simply gangs of ronin with seafaring experience who had turned to raiding coastal towns and cities, or they tended to be bands of disgruntled or desperate peasants. The clans themselves, however, did play an active role in Rokugani piracy. Some accused the Mantis Clan of wholesale piracy because of the methods they employed to secure their waters, but as their raiders were commissioned by the clan, and therefore indirectly by the Emperor, they would technically be considered privateers.

- A pirate in the world of One Piece is anyone who raises a Jolly Roger, whether they commit an act of piracy or not. This is not, however, usually enough to give anyone a bounty, but is enough to be arrested by the Marines. Bandits are said to be the opposite of pirates. The two have not been known to get along with each other too well. There are two types of pirates in One Piece, but the terms were only in the original Romance Dawn chapter. They have not been mentioned in the current version of One Piece and it is doubtful they still apply to it.
- A Pirate is usually a murderous cutthroat who travels on a ship. They are usually evil and want treasure and riches. They loot other ships in search for gold and jewels. In Fable and Fable: The Lost Chapters, piracy has started out and some people are already collecting riches on the sea. A pirate had died out at sea and wanted you to give his wife his money which he buried in the Treasure of the Ghost Pirate quest. The unnamed narrator of Tales of Albion also refers to pirates operating out of Oakvale before he went on a quest to shut down their operations.
- A pirate, also known as a tomboy, is a wannabe anti-hero who sails the seas on wooden boats and looks out of toy telescopes like a little kid, often wearing little kids' clothes, too, because it's their favorite type of clothing to wear. A pirate likes to wear an eyepatch so he has the excuse of "terrible depth perception" for when he fails to capture someone, he wears a stupid looking hat because he caught a glance of himself in a mirror and thought he looked "moderately good", and he wears a peg on his leg so he can have an excuse for being too lazy to chase someone down other than by boat.

- Pirates usually travel through the seas of the world of Daventry hunting for treasures buried at the shores. - Pirate is the second-lowest rank a player can have in a crew. Players are generally given the rank of pirate once they have subscribed or purchased a rank badge, but the requirements for promotion differ with each crew. Pirates have all the rights of cabin persons, but with a badge (Doubloon Oceans), they can also play the gunnery puzzle without an order from an officer or above. In a democratic crew, pirates may create and vote on issues. Depending on a crew's booty shares, pirates may receive a different share than those of other ranks during booty division.
- A pirate is a person who commits acts of robbery on another vessel either in space or traditionally at sea. A person who does so on behalf of a sovereign government is called a privateer. The GHS Marianela began her career as a Prime Industries sectorial flagship before being captured by the Gorn Hegemony. Along with the RIS Bouteina it launched an attack on a planet held by a Mirak-dominated pirate cartel to both recover some of the crew of the Marianela and to privateer from the cartel by outright capturing the planet. - A pirate is a thief on the high seas. Piracy's Golden Age in the Real World lasted between 1650 and 1725 and spawned lots of literature, sea shanties, and folklore. Because of this, the archetype of the lovable rogue and the heroic swashbuckler are now deeply embedded into our culture. Since pirates are mostly a glamorous idea of the distant past, fangirls have a predilection for de-fanging the whole concept of piracy and making it out to be a Glorious Calling of Extreme Liberty and Cool Rebellion Against Authority. Many Mary Sues fall in love with pirates, totally ignorant of what this would realistically mean.
