Fakirs (or snake charmers) are people in Daventry and the Other World which are capable of charming snakes, causing the reptiles to go into brief trances induced by the rhythm of music. Fakirs can charm the king cobra and make it do the fakir's bidding, merely by playing a mystical tune for it on a flute. This may be true; however, it is said by more skeptical scientists who claim to have studied the phenomenon that the snake is just following the swaying motion of the person playing the music and not the music itself. The cobras in the world of Daventry don't seem to have heard of this pronouncement.

- A fakir was a religious mystic found in the Earth country of India Jack, a youth from Carbon Creek, Pennsylvania, when preparing for college, spent a lot of time at the library learning about far-away places, including India. While discussing meditation with T'Mir, Jack explained to her that from his readings, he learned of the fakirs. He noted that they supposedly could almost stop their hearts by the use of willpower, to which T'Mir responded, "You'd be surprised what a disciplined mind can accomplish." (ENT: "Carbon Creek")
