The game takes place within the fictional Marvel universe and features many of the universe's most iconic and recognized superheroes and supervillains while introducing some lesser-known characters. The storyline is exclusive to the game but retains some aspects and elements from other known Marvel Comics publications such as "Secret Invasion", "The Thanos Imperative" and the finale of "Civil War".
