Both Xehanort and Eraqus are up for potentially becoming masters. He cares deeply for both students, but fears for Xehanort for his brashness, arrogance, and quickness to temper. Feeling that he may not be ready to be a master and reveals that Eraqus is his intended successor as the Steward of The Land of Departure, and thus the head of the order. When Xehanort learns of all this however, it makes him feel resentful towards both Tetsu and Eraqus. (Something that Chernabog manages to help manipulate him with) Though Eraqus doesn't feel he's good enough for such a responsibility, and at this point still looks up to the older Xehanort. Eventually after Gobanrehc is discovered to be the true mastermind behind the Heartless Eraqus and Tetsu go to confront him together. They try to take him quietly, but Gobanrhec attacks them. They fight astride each other for a while until Tetsu is eventually cast down when he gets in the way of a powerful attack directed at Eraqus in order to save his life. Left fighting alone Eraqus struggles though eventually manages to subdue his foe. Tetsu dies in his arms, telling him to look out for his friends and re-affirms his faith in Eraqus to take his place before passing on.
