  • by user DNL Last week's tragic events at Virginia Tech have made many reconsider how we handle the problem of untreated mental illness. For Bill Richardson, governor of New Hampshire and outsider Presidential candidate, the question is nothing new. In January 2006, Richardson proposed a law which, in the words of the T reatment Advocacy Center, "allow courts to order people with severe untreated mental illness who meet certain criteria into outpatient mental health treatment." Gov. Richardson boldly supported the law, saying in 2006: "[The law] will help patients live and function in their communities by working to get them the compassionate care and treatment they need,. We need this law to prevent events like the tragic murders in Albuquerque last summer. We have to do everything we can to prevent this from happening to another family, another police officer, or another community, ever again," making reference to the 2003 murder of an Albuquerque police officer who was shot by an assailant suffering from brain injuries and schizophrenia. The law proposed by Richardson is similar to one enacted in New York, colloquially called Kendra's Law. __NOEDITSECTION__ From The Opinion Wiki, a Wikia wiki. From The Opinion Wiki, a Wikia wiki.
