During the development of the fetus, the reproductive canal develops into a uterus in the absence of any other stimulus. However, where there is a male "Y" chromosome, the tissue that would normally form a uterus instead becomes part of the male testicles. When this developmental process does not occur, for example in cases of male pseudohermaphroditism or genetic mosaicism, the uterus continues to exist, but does not develop into either a functioning uterus or functioning testicles.
