Cull Heel was of the Heel Iceblood clan. He was also known as 'Cull the Kind'. His wife was Yullveig. They had a son called Baran and a daughter called Erta. Erta was not his biological daughter. She came with Yullveig when Cull invited the two clanless Icebloods to join his household. Cull often left his family to travel, sometimes sailing as a pirate or working as a mercenary. Once while away, lowlanders burned his Greathall and killed many of his kin. Cull did not seek vengeance against the outsiders saying, "death does not erase death" and he preferred to warn people off his land rather than kill him. This drove a wedge between him and his son.

Cull was extremely tall with a wild tangle of brown hair and a bushy beard reaching to his chest. His wife claimed his odd manner was the result of falling off a cliff and hitting his head as a child.
