Sliem is a Maltese word meaning peace, wellbeing and comfort. The town of Sliema in Malta derives its name from this word, as applied in the Maltese prayer "Sliem Għalik Marija". It is cognate with salaam in Arabic and shalom in Hebrew, as well as the extinct Phoenician salem. The Arabic and Hebrew greetings As-Salamu Alaykum (السلام عليكم) and Shalom aleichem (שָׁלוֹם עֲלֵיכֶם) correspond with the Maltese expression, Sliem għalikhom. Maltese is written in the Latin alphabet in its standard form.
