The TIE Advanced, better known as the TIE Avenger, is the culmination of a series of starfighter designs first explored with the TIE Advanced x1. Incorporating the previous successes of the TIE series starfighters, along with those of the Rebel Alliance, the TIE Avenger is one of the first production starfighters to break away from the Imperial doctrine of quantity over quality. Incorporating deflector shields, a hyperdrive, and warhead launchers, it was also significantly faster and more maneuverable than any existing Imperial or Rebel starfighter at the time of its introduction, so enemy pilots nicknamed them "brights".

  • The TIE Advanced, better known as the TIE Avenger, is the culmination of a series of starfighter designs first explored with the TIE Advanced x1. The TIE Avenger is a descendant of the TIE/Advanced series, which were designed as the next generation to succeed the TIE Fighter. Avengers share many commonalities with the TIE Advanced x1; notably bent-wing solar arrays, flattened and extended fuselage, and non-standard wing pylons in contrast to other TIE series fighters. Similar to its older cousin, the TIE Interceptor, the Avenger features the intimidating pointed dagger solar arrays, not only in front but also in the rear. The Avenger's sleek design is credited with significantly reducing its profile, compared to other Advanced prototypes, while still retaining a comparable surface area for collecting energy. The TIE Avenger's primary weapon systems are the four Sienar Fleet Systems L-s9.3 laser cannons. Two SFS M-g-2 general-purpose warhead launchers form the Avenger's secondary weapon system, possessing a magazine capacity of four concussion missiles each; however, they can also be loaded with proton torpedoes, heavy rockets, and space bombs. This standard feature is yet another advancement against the older TIE fighters, and the beginning of a major shift in Imperial doctrine leaning towards quality over quantity. The TIE Avenger is powered by the SFS I-s3a solar ionization reactor and features the new SFS P-sx7.4 ion engines. This new propulsion system pushed the Avenger faster than any previous TIE starfighter. The Avenger is also more nimble than the TIE Interceptor and the RZ-1 A-wing Interceptor. As impressive as its speed and agility is, the Avenger is still a small craft in the mold of the TIE Fighter and TIE Interceptor, and emphasizes space superiority due to its small warhead load and lack of ion cannons. The Avenger lost the performance crown by a small margin to the TIE Defender. While the difference are minor, it was significant considering the Defender's triple wing design and larger hull, and numerous advances over the Avenger, such as a more powerful hyperdrive, larger warhead magazines, ion cannons, stronger shields, and reinforced armor. This made the Defender larger and heavier than any of its predecessors — a fact which made its speed and maneuverability all the more impressive. Coinciding with the trend of improved quality in Imperial starfighters, the Avenger is equipped with deflector shields. Like earlier TIE series fighters, the Avenger's great speed and agility coupled with its small size make it a difficult target. In a similar precedent, the Avenger's armor plating is marginal, however, the inclusion of deflector shields means that the Avenger will not fall prey to stray debris or laser fire that claim unshielded TIEs, and with its shields at full power, the Avenger is exceptionally difficult to destroy.
  • In 16 ABY, the Avenger was unveiled in a clandestine summit attended by Warlord Vassily Korolov and Jal'Dana Rall. Greatly impressed by the TIE Avenger's performance, plans were laid for production of the craft in utmost secrecy. Pilots were hand picked by Marshal Krieg Inrokana from Task Force Inquisitor, including Liza Molokai and Richter Varion. The Avenger was first deployed in a series of raids on civilian shipping through the Mon Calamari system, care was taken to ensure that these raids left no survivors who could relate intelligence to the New Republic. The crowning achievement of the Avenger series was the destruction of Rogue Squadron in 17 ABY. It was not until later that the TIE Avenger began to show its flaws. A technically innovative starfighter, the Avenger proved substantially more expensive and complicated to produce than the mainstream TIE Interceptor. This alone may have proven tolerable, but it soon became apparent why the earlier prototype had been abandoned. The TIE Avenger suffered from serious malfunctions up to and including self-destruction in catastrophic power overloads. It required constant maintenance and most production models spent well over 90% of their time in pieces under-going repairs and retuning. These 'kinks' had been suppressed during the trial stages and while the Avenger functioned well as a prototype, with entire teams of engineers and scientists preparing it for every flight, it was declared that it would never produce a working production model and the project was abandoned.
  • The TIE Advanced x3 is the the most technically inovative Starfighter to be produced by the Galactic Empire since the Battle of Endor. The ship traces its heritage back to the TIE Advanced x1 prototype flown by Darth Vader at the Battle of Yavin. Many of the advancements of the x1 were put into the x2 model. This model was dubbed the Avenger by early test pilots. It was really the first of the TIE Advanced series to go from the prototype to production stage. However only a few dozen of the vessels were ever constructed before production was stopped in favor of the vessel's sister craft the TIE Interceptor which was both easier and cheaper to produce. The TIE Advanced x2 was all but forgotten about in the turmoil that followed the death of the Emperor Palpatine at Endor. Most of the models that had been produced were either destroyed in combat or scrapped due to high operating costs. One prototype and a single production model as well as the relevant data plans were hauled off by Imperial Archivist for storage in one of the secret data vaults deep in the Inner Core. The TIE Advanced line of fighters would remain dormant until a series of events started early in the year 10 ABY. Emperor Bacharan Valak commissioned Warlord Jarl Rellik with overseeing a new department he was forming within the Imperial Government. Given the innocuous title of Curator of the Imperial Archives, Rellik was given the assignment of pouring through the various data repositories throughout the Empire in search of technology that could turn the tide of the war. With the troubles that begin bubbling up in the Empire, this secret department and its important mission would be lost to successive administrations. In 14 ABY, Archaeologists uncovered a non-descript warehouse deep in the bowels of the city planet Empress Teta. Inside that warehouse not only were both of the surviving x2 fighters found, but the prototype for a new power plant, that would provide nearly 50% more power at half the weight of the x2s. The fighters, power plant and documents were clandestinely relocated to an Imperial Archives facility deep within Imperial space, known as Point Omega. Imperial scientists would pull the x2 fighters apart hundreds of times over the next two years, using what was found in the archives along with their own to design the TIE Advanced x3. The chaos going on in the galaxy all but unknown as the station was kept isolated from the larger galaxy. It would be in mid 16 ABY when Point Omega would end its isolation and again make contact with the outside world. Warlord Rellik would contact another of Emperor Valak's inner circle, Vassily Korolov to let him know what they had discovered. In a clandestine meeting on Point Omega, Korolov along with his Naval Advisor Jal'Dana Rall would be the first members of the Imperial Government to see the TIE Avenger take flight in over 15 years. They were duly impressed at the fighter’s performance, quickly putting into motion the assets necessary to construct the vessels quickly and with complete secrecy. Point Epsilon would be constructed first with a pair of Imperial Star Galleon's with a single Imperial Strike Cruiser for support. Later a full space station would be constructed, funded in part by the Imperial Government and by KDY-SFS to become part production facility, part test station. Within a couple of months, an entire squadron of the advanced fighters was ready for trials and deployment. Warlord Korolov chose the commander of his task force, Marshal Krieg Inrokana would be given the task of picking the best pilots from his Task Force, training them and then testing how they fared in combat. Liza Molokai and Richter Varion were hand picked by the Marhsal to be some of his first combat test pilots. Initial trials were conducted in secret - out in the deep depths of empty space. However, the fighter was quickly proving itself to be one of the finest weapons ever produced, and efforts were soon underway to see its effectiveness in combat. Marshal Inrokana, in conjunction with the ISB, planned raids on civilian convoys passing to the Mon Calamari system. TIE Scouts, Skipray Blastboats, and Lambda-class Shuttles were used in the raids to resupply the Avengers in combat as well as to block all communications traffic. Everything was destroyed in the raid, and ejected pilots were killed, leaving no traces. Larger and larger targets were taken on and from the resulting confusion of a 'deadly space ghost' was thought to be the cause of the lost convoys. The sheer power and speed of the fighter along with its ability to conduct highly secretive operations anywhere in the galaxy deemed it a major success. The end result of those trials would be seen early in 17 ABY when Rogue Squadron would be annihilated in a trap laid by Marshal Inrokana and assisted by Warlord Korolov who would lead one of the flights of Avengers personally.
