Windows NT is a family of operating systems produced by Microsoft, the first version of which was released in July 1993. It was originally designed to be a powerful high level language based processor independent multiprocessing multiuser operating system with features comparable to UNIX to complement workstation versions of Windows that were based on MS-DOS until 2001. It was the first 32-bit version of Windows. Since increases in processor performance, Windows XP and Windows Server 2003 are actually the latest versions of Windows NT, though they are not branded as such for marketing purposes.

| - Windows NT je plně 32 bitový operační systém firmy Microsoft pro osobní počítače. Jeho následníkem byl operační systém Windows 2000. Přestože se firma rozhodla z obchodních důvodů dále nepoužívat přívlastek NT (New Technology, česky nová technologie), vycházejí i následovníci Windows NT ze stejného jádra operačního systému. V současné době se poslední verze operačních systémů, založených na technologii NT jmenují: * Windows XP * Windows Server 2003 * Windows Vista * Windows Server 2008 Zajímavostí je, že Windows Server 2008 vyšel s označením Service Pack 1 (build 6001) a jedná se tedy o stejnou aktualizaci jako první servisní balíček pro Windows Vista. Nadále již budou updaty společné pro serverový i desktopový OS, jako to mu bylo u Windows 2000 a NT 4.0. Windows XP a Window Server 2003 měly mírně odlišné jádro a jiné aktualizace. V druhé polovině roku 2009 se očekává nová verze systému Windows Seven. Bude obsahovat jádro pojmenované MinWin, které se vrací k původním kořenům jádra NT - tedy co nejmenší počet funkcí, optimalizovaný kód, minimální velikost (předpokládá se 33 MB) a vysoká rychlost načítání.

One of the original OS/2 3.0 developers, Mark Lucovsky, states that the name was taken from the original target processor—the Intel i860, code-named N10 ('N-Ten'). Various Microsoft publications, including a 1998 question-and-answer session with Bill Gates, reveal that the letters were expanded to 'New Technology' for marketing purposes but no longer carry any specific meaning. The letters were dropped from the name of Windows 2000, though Microsoft described the product as 'Built on NT technology.'
