Lewis was born as Sonia Phyllis Hurwitz to Ann Ritz and Abraham Hurwitz, an education professor at Yeshiva University. She had one sister. Her parents encouraged her to perform and her father, who had been named New York City's "official magician" by Mayor Fiorello H. LaGuardia during the Great Depression, taught her to perform specialized magic acts by age 13. She also received instruction in acrobatics, juggling, ice skating, baton twirling, piano, and violin. She was taught ventriloquism by John W. Cooper. She continued piano and violin at New York's High School of Music and Art, dance at the American School of Ballet, and acting with Sanford Meisner of the Neighborhood Playhouse. She attended Barnard College, but left after one year to go into show business.

- She was born H.H. Qiangmeng Aisin-gioro Puyi, daughter of Dowager Dragon Empress Rway Xing and Massachusetts vacuum cleaner demonstrator Henry Higgins, on June 23, 1921, in a broom cupboard in Alexandra Palace, Muswell Hill, North London, United Kingdom, which had been declared Chinese sovereign territory in order to accommodate her birth. Subsequently it was claimed that a drafting error by the then Foreign Secretary, the notoriously drunken Lord Asquith, had invalidated the transfer deed by not specifying whether it was the broom cupboard that was Chinese, or the whole of Alexandra Palace, or indeed the whole of the United Kingdom. Microscopic examination of Asquith's signature in 1994 established that he had in fact leased Lindisfarne to the Chinese for 99 years.
- In 1995, she appeared as herself (and Lamb Chop) in an episode of The Nanny, which co-starred Daniel Davis.
- Sonia Phyllis Hurwitz known by her stage name Shari Lewis, and her puppet Lambchop, appeared in the episode, "Summer Sucks", on Mr. Garrison's television. In the episode, Mr. Garrison fantasizes about severing Lamb Chop from Shari's hand and grilling it.
- Shari Lewis (January 17, 1933 - August 2, 1998 ) was an American puppeteer best known for her character of Lamb Chop.
- Shari Lewis (1933-1998) was a ventriloquist, actress, and puppeteer who is considered a pioneer of children's puppetry. Her most famous characters were Lamb Chop, Charlie Horse and Hush Puppy. Lewis' awards include consecutive "Outstanding Performer in a Children's Series" wins from 1992 to 1996, beating Sonia Manzano, Jerry Nelson, Ruth Buzzi, and Martin P. Robinson. A 2002 win beat Kevin Clash.

When interviewed by USA Today following Jim Henson's death in 1990, Shari Lewis offered the following observations: "He raised puppeteering to an art form beyond people who just jiggle dolls. Lamb Chop and Kermit were very funny together. Kermit would get very rattled whenever she asked, 'So Kermie, how's the pig?'" Lewis' awards include consecutive "Outstanding Performer in a Children's Series" wins from 1992 to 1996, beating Sonia Manzano, Jerry Nelson, Ruth Buzzi, and Martin P. Robinson.
