After WWI the Spanish monarch was made to stand down by the victorious Imperial Alliance and they installed the brother of the Brasilian Emperor Pedro III who ruled as Maxamilian I of Argentina. As a result Argentina remained absent from WWII and did not contest Brasilian dominance of the continent. However Maxamilian was not his brothers puppet and led Argentina on an independent course that saw him become a popular leader ruling the advice of an elected parliament. In 1960 however the Spanish Empire invaded once more, Brasil and Argentina fought a bloody war against the Spanish that saw the use of tactical nuclear weapons by both sides and was the only time in the later half of the 20th century (Excluding the civil war) that two great powers fought each other.
