  • Diti was the daughter of Daksha and was married to Kashyap the sage. She was the mother of many Asuras and was antagonistic to her sister; Aditi (also married to Kashyap), mother of numerous gods. She was jealous of her sister for having children whilst she was childless. She then gave birth to Hiranyaksha and Hiranyakashipu. After they were killed by Vishnu in his forms of Varaha and Narasimha respectively, she prayed for a child more powerful than Indra, king of the gods and her nephew. She remained pregnant for a year and the fetus was shattered by Indra's lightning bolt, creating the 100 Maruts, or storm spirits.

She is among one of the sixty daughters of Daksha. She is one of the thirteen wives of Kashyapa, another prajapati and a great sage. She has many demon sons and daughters. Her two most famous sons were the rebirths of Vishnu's gatekeepers Jaya and Vijaya who failed to keep their dharma. They were Hiranyaksha who was slain by Vishnu's varaha avatara and Hiranyakashipu who was slain by Vishnu's man-lion, narasimha avatara. She also had a daughter named Holika who was killed by her own powers. Diti is usually mean and cruel to Kashyapa and Aditi. She is always obsessed with trying to raise the power of demons to its peak. She also hates Aditi's sons who are the gods.

Diti was also the grandmother of Prahlada (son of Hiranyakashipu) and, through him, ancestress of both Mahabali and Ravana.
