Mugly is what appears to be an amalgamation of a rhino, a toad and a porcupine that acts as a boss in Donkey Kong Country Returns and Donkey Kong Country Returns 3D. Like many of the other animals on Donkey Kong Island, Mugly is under the control of the Tiki Tak Tribe. Donkey and Diddy Kong encounter it in a colosseum eating many of Donkey Kong's Bananas from his Banana Hoard. They also witness Mugly fall under the spell of the Kalimba.

- Donkey Kong and Diddy Kong first encountered Mugly gobbling up bananas. Mugly was then under the spell of the Kalimba. Once he had been bonked in the back three times, he got angrier and turned orange, then red after another three hits. Mugly then collapsed to the ground after beaten a few more times, while Donkey Kong and Diddy Kong punched Kalimba away.
- Mugly is the first boss appearing in Donkey Kong Country Returns who is an unknown species known by anyone currently. Mugly appears in the Jungle world where he can be seen eating some bananas until Kalimba hypnotizes him to attack Donkey and Diddy. Thugly appears to be the same species as Mugly and is likely to be Mugly's relative.
- Mugly has only four attacks. His most basic attack is just basically running across the screen back and forth. During this time, his spikes are retracted, which gives the Kongs (Donkey Kong and Diddy Kong) a chance to jump on him. Mugly can also jump along the stage, trying to crush the Kongs beneath him. During Mugly's second stage, he can jump high in the air and create a huge shockwave when he lands. Also during Mugly's second and third stage, he can charge with EXTREME SPEED at the Kongs, however, this can be easily jumped over. This causes Mugly to run into the wall and become dizzy for a while. During each stage, he attacks and performs faster.
