George Gunary (1873-May 1940) was a farmer and local politician active in the Ilford area. The eldest son of Samuel Gunary, he entered the family's farming business: there were separate companies growing vegetables on 3,000 acres of land in Essex and Suffolk. He entered local government, and was the second Mayor of Ilford in 1927-28. In the 1930s he retired from farming, selling Primrose Farm, North Ockendon, and purchasing Ockendon Hall with the proceeds. He was also able to give lavish gifts of money and fur coats to his children.
