The crane melon is a 4 to 7 pound melon that is shaped like a soccer ball. The melon has aromatic orange flesh. The melon was developed by Oliver Crane in the early 1900s by crossing several melon varieties including a Japanese melon, a white melon, a Persian melon and an ambrosia melon. The crane melon is rare because its shelf life is to short for it to be shipped to stores.
