He remains the only German to hold the role. Of German nobility, Metternich entered many races, including the 1956 24 Hours of Le Mans (which he failed to finish), the Mille Miglia and the Monte Carlo Rally. He became president of the Automobilclub von Deutschland in 1960 and became a member of the FIA committee. In 1970 he was made president of the International Sporting Commission (CSI), and in 1975 he became FIA President. He retired from the role in 1985. He was preceded by Amaury de Merode and succeeded by Jean-Marie Balestre.
