| - R2-D2 was an astromech droid who served under the Skywalker family for multiple generations, The droid was tasked with the extraordinary mission of gathering data based on the Skywalker family to include in the Journal of the Whills, a database compiling a history of the Galaxy. Following his induction into the Whill society, R2 was secretly implanted onto a starship of the Galactic Republic under the command of Jedi Master Obi-Wan Kenobi in an alternate reality by the Shaman of the Whills. His purpose in this universe to was bring about the fall and redemption of Anakin Skywalker, a good hearted moisture farmer on Tatooine destined to bring peace to the Galaxy. During the Clone Wars, when a resurgent Sith Empire commanded by Darth Maul and Darth Sidious required the Republic to authorize the creation of a clone army to combat the growing threat, the droid sabotaged Kenobi's starship while it was under attack by the forces of Darth Maul over Tatooine while transferring Senator Palpatine of Naboo to the galactic capital of Coruscant. This forced Kenobi and Palpatine to escape to Tatooine in an escape pod, where they were taken in by Anakin Skywalker and nursed back to health. The droid's subtle manipulation of galactic events continued through the end of the Clone Wars, when the now Supreme Chancellor of the Republic, Palpatine, Darth Sidious, announced his merger of the Sith Empire and the Galactic Republic into one, mighty Galactic Empire, with his new apprentice, Skywalker, now Darth Vader. After the Emperor declared the Jedi Order as enemies of the newly christened Empire, it was the droid who would send Vader the coordinates of the Gehenna, a frigate harboring refugees of the Old Republic, including Kenobi, Vader's wife Padme, and his brother, Deak, over the volcanic planet of Mustafar. The resulting confrontation would lead to the deaths of Padme and Deak, and a lightsaber duel between Kenobi and Vader. Kenobi redirected the flight course of the Gehenna to collide with the Sea of Fire on Mustafar, leaving Vader for dead and escaping to Mustafar's moon, Polis Massa. On the moon of Polis Massa, Kenobi and Senator Bail Organa of Alderaan began to question the droid's loyalties and ordered to have his programming wiped for safe measures. Before this action was taken, the Shaman of the Whills finally revealed himself, via the droid's hologram projector. The Shaman revealed the droid's true purpose, assuring that R2 was essential for history to play itself out. The Shaman also assured Kenobi and Organa that their world was not the only one in existence.
