When the government of Signet Mezzileen fell at the end of the Mezzilenic War, it was agreed that elections for a new Senate and a new Chancellor would be held as soon as possible. It became clear early on that the Democratic Republican Party was likely to win the Senate and have its leader Arf Fey'lya elected Chancellor. While acting Chancellor Harza Klim kept the government ticking over, the politicians positioned themselves for the elections to follow. It became clear early on that the Democratic Republican Party was likely to win the Senate and have its leader Arf Fey'lya elected Chancellor. Fey'lya's actions during the war had alienated himself from many of the moderates in the Senate and in the Jedi Order. The Jedi were determined that he would not be elected and approached the moderate Merix Valorum and ask him to stand against Fey'lya. Merix agreed and formed the Alliance Party to provide an alternative to the Democratic Republicans. In the Senate elections that followed, Fey'lya won the most votes and his party took almost half the seats. However Valorum was not far behind and was able to secure a majority by allying with both the Rim and Core parties, who were now the largest majority parties in the Senate. Although some Rim Party members switched support to the Democratic Republicans the Alliance faction was able to keep their majority, but it was clear that it would be a close race between Valorum and Fey'lya for the position of Chancellor.
