Signals is the ninth studio album by the Canadian rock band Rush, released September 9, 1982. Signals was the follow-up to the successful Moving Pictures. Stylistically, the album was a continuation of Rush's foray into the technology-oriented 1980s through increased use of electronic instrumentation such as keyboards, sequencers, and electric violin. Other noticeable changes were decreased average song length and lyrical compression. The album reached #10 on the Billboard album charts and was certified Platinum (1,000,000 copies sold) by the R.I.A.A. in November 1982.

  • In the physical world, any quantity measurable through time or over space can be taken as a signal. Within a complex society, any set of human information or machine data can also be taken as a signal. Such information or machine data (for example, the dots on a screen, the ink making up text on a paper page, or the words now flowing into the reader's mind) must all be part of systems existing in the physical world – either living or non-living.
  • In terms of running railways, signals are mechanical or electrical devices erected beside a railway to pass information relating to the state of the line ahead of the engine. Signalmen use these to alert the engine's crew to stop when another engine passes in order to avoid an accident. However, sometimes engines do not pay attention. One time, Henry was pulling "The Flying Kipper" when he collided with a goods train because snow and ice forced the signal down, making it appear that the line was clear.

  • Signals is the debut full length album by Call The Station. It was released on November 12, 2013. Recorded at Westfall Studios in Farmingdale, NY with Ray Marte and Anthony Lopardo. The band originally intended to record with Anthony Rega at Five Three Studios but made the switch after months of demoing. Rega was brought in to co-produce the album as well as drumming on both the demos and final tracks. Pre Production began in mid October and official tracking lasted from November up until March.

On Sodor, all signals point upward to indicate that an engine needs to stop and downward to indicate "go". Gordon and James once played a trick on Percy about "backing signals". So when Percy came to a signal and it went up instead of down to indicate that he could go, he thought it was a "backing signal". However, in recent episodes, the signal for "go" has changed back to downwards.

So when Percy came to a signal and it went up instead of down to indicate that he could go, he thought it was a "backing signal". Toby was once baffled by the large gantry at Knapford. James also knocked down two signals, once with some wellwagons of tractors, and another with Rocky's crane arm causing confusion and delay. However, in recent episodes, the signal for "go" has changed back to downwards.

Such information or machine data (for example, the dots on a screen, the ink making up text on a paper page, or the words now flowing into the reader's mind) must all be part of systems existing in the physical world – either living or non-living. Despite the complexity of such systems, their outputs and inputs can often be represented as simple quantities measurable through time or across space. In the latter half of the 20th century, electrical engineering itself separated into several disciplines, specializing in the design and analysis of physical signals and systems, on the one hand, and in the functional behavior and conceptual structure of the complex human and machine systems, on the other. These engineering disciplines have led the way in the design, study, and implementation of systems that take advantage of signals as simple measurable quantities in order to facilitate the transmission, storage, and manipulation of information.
