Desirability
| - The value of the shield of raw steel is hotly debated among players. Statistically, it is without question the best shield in the game, with a base DV of 18, PV of 12, an increase of +8 to Toughness, as well as the very desirable fire immunity, and somewhat convenient cold immunity and poison resistance. These factors make it an ideal item for the Tower of Eternal Flames, since the shield alone accounts for the four intrinsic fire resistances that would otherwise be needed. The increased toughness, PV, and DV are also considered great assets for the tower.
Unfortunately, the shield also carries the essence of Chaos and corruption, meaning that it corrupts the player while it is being carried, and doubly so if it is equipped, and the effect is otherwise comparable to the corruption the player would expect to receive only on the lowest levels of the CoC. Furthermore, the player is forced to kill Guth'Alak, a potential source of many potions of cure corruption. Since most players ascend the tower well before level 30, this also likely denies the player access to the unicorn quest, which provides complete corruption removal. This means that players who wish to take the shield will likely face more severe corruption problems later in the game, particularly if they make extensive use of it.
If any consensus on the subject can be reached, it is that the shield is a huge asset for players intending on playing a fast game, particularly speedruns. Players committed to an Ultra ending usually forego the shield since they are likely to experience significantly more corruption.
