Rovers advanced to the second round of the League Cup thanks to a penalty shoot-out win over Championship side Watford. The game, which had been postponed for a week at the request of the police, saw two goals scored in the first five minutes but then remain goalless for the next 85, necessitating extra time. No more goals were forthcoming over the extra half hour, so a penalty shoot-out was required to decide who would progress in the competition.

abstract
| - Rovers advanced to the second round of the League Cup thanks to a penalty shoot-out win over Championship side Watford. The game, which had been postponed for a week at the request of the police, saw two goals scored in the first five minutes but then remain goalless for the next 85, necessitating extra time. No more goals were forthcoming over the extra half hour, so a penalty shoot-out was required to decide who would progress in the competition. Rovers took the early advantage in the shoot-out, with Jo Kuffour scoring and Scott Bevan saving John Eustace's attempt, but the lead was canceled out immediately when Scott McGleish sent his effort wide of the post and Marvin Sordell scored. Adam Virgo, Adrian Mariappa and Wayne Brown all found the net before Bevan again provided the heroics by deflecting Carl Dickinson's shot onto the crossbar. That left Mustapha Carayol to finish the job, and he obliged by calmly rolling the ball into the bottom right-hand corner of the goal to send Rovers through to the second round to meet Leyton Orient at Brisbane Road.
