The Ghoul, or Gallu, is a type of demonic spirit associated with death and the underworld. Ghūl (Arabic: غول) are beings from Arabian mythology. In Islam, the Ghoul was interpreted as a stray type of genie said to be the offspring of Iblis (Iblis is the islamic version of Satan), but the term and its' associated concept of an "evil spirit" predate the Islamic period significantly and have been documented in ancient Mesopotamia.

  • The Ghoul, or Gallu, is a type of demonic spirit associated with death and the underworld. Ghouls are said to be able to shapeshift into the form of animals, often taking on the guise of a hyena, or even humans of alluring beauty, to mislead humans. According to some accounts, any form taken by a ghoul is readily discernible because it retains hooves. They inhabit burial grounds and uninhabited places, luring travellers into the desert to slay and devour them. They also prey on children, drink blood, steal coins, rob graves and eat the dead, taking on the form of the one they ate. The aspect of necrophagy, as shown, is but one in their devilish portfolio, however it seems to have been the most influential one in determining the ghoul's depiction in modern-day western culture. When the term is used in Western fiction, it commonly refers to an undead corpse-eater.
