People's Republic of Iran was a short-lived socialist republic in the Iranian provinces of Azerbaijan, Gilan and Mazandaran that lasted from 1923 to 1924. Also know has the Persian People's Republic. Established by Mirza Kouchek Khan Jangali, a leader of the Constitutionalist movement of Gilan, and his Jangali (Foresters Movement) with assistance of Red Army and the Transcaucasian FSR. A similar state was established in northern Afghanistan (Afghan Democratic Republic).
