Lavoisier was a French chemist who, due to his noble birth and post of farmer general was briefly incarcerated during the revolution. He was later released and contributed to the French war effort. (The post he held was a tax-farmer - posts which were bought, and where the owner had to remit a certain amount of the tax collected and could keep whatever else they raised. Needless to say many holders attempted to recoup the purchase price and make a profit.)
