The Science of Game of Thrones is explained by the concepts of paralleled universes and divergent timelines. Soon after the end of the Pleistocene Epoch in the parallel universe that is the Game of Thrones universe, a comet impacted with the Moon. The impact subsequently led to a meteor shower of large pieces of the Moon bombarding the surface of the Earth. The meteor shower drastically altered the geography of the planet. Although the comet impact did not completely shatter the Moon, it did destroy enough of the Earth's satellite to significantly decrease its size.

  • The Science of Game of Thrones is explained by the concepts of paralleled universes and divergent timelines. A gravitational effect of the smaller Moon is that the Earth's rotational axis has been permanently destabilized. Because of that, the planet has inconsistent and unpredictable seasonal lengths. The altered planetary geography (which includes extremely large oceans, an abundance of gigantic mountains, exceptionally strong ocean currents and extremely powerful prevailing winds) also contributes to the creation of the unpredictable weather trends. Along with the altered geographical landscape, another effect of the meteor shower was a brief but considerable disruption of the stratosphere's blocking of cosmic radiation. During that disruption, the bombardment of radiation caused various mutations to take place amongst life on Earth. Animals that arose include shadowcats, dragons and krakens. Even new plant life such as weirwood trees arose. Also, direwolves developed physical mutations that enabled them to avoid extinction. Humanity was also affected. From the mutations arose new human races such as Giants and the Children of the Forest. A benevolent mutation that spread among all humanity was the capacity to mentally summon and control energies and entities from hyper-dimensional universes congruent to the Game of Thrones universe and use them to manipulate the fundamental interactions of nature and even aspects of the space-time continuum itself. This capacity is the source of the force known as "magic" and it was especially strong in the Children of the Forest. Due to a macroscopic form of quantum entanglement, there exists a multiversal reverse entropy that causes universes in parallel with each other to converge towards specific configurations despite their divergent timelines. As a result, despite vast historical differences certain circumstances are paralleled in both our universe and the Game of Thrones universe. Most prominently are that the culture of the continent of Westeros greatly resembles the culture of medieval Europe and the dominant language of Westeros, the "Common Tongue", is linguistically identical to the modern English language.
