Aang was born an orphan, his father already dead and his mother dying in childbirth. Aang was raised by the Jedi Master Kaara Nivos, who also took him on as her apprentice. Aang became close friends with many other young Jedi living in Batria's Jedi Temple, and frequently found himself engaged in adventures with his closest friends. It was during one of these adventures that Aang and his compatriots discovered a plot by the Sith Lord Darth Fenghuang to subject Batria to a thorough orbital bombardment in order to deprive the Republic and Jedi of the world's many Force-sensitives as well as its Jedi Temple. By this point a Jedi Knight, Aang rallied Batria's Force-sensitive natives into a defensive force, forming a Jedi host which history would come to know as the Army of Wind, although neither Aang nor his comrades ever referred to it by that name, instead calling it the Batrian Resistance or Batrian Aegis. While the Army of Wind was able to repulse the initial orbital bombardment (though not before the Batrian Temple was destroyed), Fenghuang and his Infernal Legions refused to give up their campaign to eliminate the world. The ensuing Battle of Batria would rage on for half a decade. Nivos was mortally wounded during the fighting, and on her deathbead conferred upon Aang the rank of Jedi Master as well as the position of Sage of the Batrian Temple, which Nivos had previously held. Now the highest-ranking Jedi on Batria, Aang set out to bring the battle to a swift and decisive conclusion. That conclusion would come when Darth Fenghuang challenged Aang to a duel in the remains of Batria's Temple. The fight pushed both parties to their limit, but Aang ultimately emerged victorious. Disorganized and confused following the death of their leader, the remaining Infernal Legions proved easy to push off of Batria, to merge with one of the many other Sith factions in existence at the time. Aang received praise from Coruscant for his actions, although his lack of orthodoxy in certain aspects of Jedi life, especially with regards to personal attachments, meant that the High Council declined to offer him a seat. Following the battle, Aang set about the long and difficult task of rebuilding Batria and its Temple, a task which had been accomplished at least by the time of his death. Aang held a seat on the Batrian Temple's local Council from the time of the Temple's restoration until his death. Aang had a number of children, and at least one of his descendents, Tenzin Gyat, would also go on to become a Jedi Master. Aang would continue to influence and inspire later generations of Jedi both through tales of his exploits and directly; Korra Atiqtalaaq on one occasion spoke with a facsimile of Aang via a holocron, and later directly with Aang's Force Ghost.
