The film tells the story of the ruthless and cynical Mark Dixon (played by Dana Andrews), a police detective from the large city that all criminals despised, because his father also was one. Where the sidewalk Ends is considered a classic of the film noir genre: in particular the violence that ruined the urban society is an important noir theme.
