Born in TA 2560, Fárin was one of the Dwarves that lived in the Grey Mountains. When his uncle King Dáin I and cousin Frór had been slain by a Cold-drake, his people were forced to flee the dragon-plagued Grey Mountains while he was just 29 years old. Later in the year TA 2590, he, along with his family, joined Thrór, who managed to lead his people in rebuilding the Kingdom under the Mountain. He became the father of Fundin and Gróin and therefore an ancestor to both Bálin, a member of Thórin & Company, and Gimli Elf-friend, a member of the Fellowship of the Ring.
