- Cortez is the holder of the fifth Crystal Star, the Sapphire Star, and the former secondary antagonist of Chapter 5 in Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door.
- Cortez was a member of Raynor's Raiders in the SceeVee Special Engineering Corps. Cortez worked as a metallurgist in a luxury vehicle factory on Moria, before being picked up by Bill "Pearly" Bousquette to join the SceeVee Corps. During their operation on Gurdlac, the Corps were ambushed by a zerglings swarm, which killed Petty Officer Wolfe. A zergling then pouched on Cortez's SCV and stabbed its claws into the cockpit. Cortez survived the ordeal, and helped plan and design the SceeVee Corps's trap for the zerglings, where they would lure them into a canyon and set off explosive and spike traps. The plan was successful, and the SceeVees reclaimed their mining base.

Das System hat aber neben dem Tourismus, dem Durchgangsverkehr und seinem schönen Ausblick leider auch seine tückischen Seiten: In beiden Eiswolken treiben Ausgestoßene, Wegelagerer und Liberty Rogues ihr Unwesen. Mit einem schwach ausgerüsteten Schiff kommt man hier trotz massivem Patrouillenaufgebot nicht weit, wenn man mit diesen Fraktionen verfeindet ist. Patrouillen können nicht überall sein.

- Cortez is an old but athletic Latin American man with long hair in a ponytail. At the beginning of the game, April observes that Cortez spends most of his time on the bench outside the Border House, reading and watching the world go by, and that he actually scares her a little. However, Cortez is the only one who understands what is happening in Venice, and he soon becomes April's friend and mentor. He oversees April's first Shift and outlines what must be done to save the Balance. - Cortez is a character that appeared in the Nintendo GameCube video game Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door where he, at first, appeared as the boss and protector of the Sapphire Star, one of the Crystal Stars that awaits at the Pirate's Grotto of Keelhaul Key. Once Mario first meets the large skeletal pirate, he assumes that the plumber has come to steal his treasure, so he plans to kill him. After Mario defeats him, he explains that he actually just came for the Crystal Star, which Cortez really didn't care for, so he decided to give it to him. Soon later, the pirate decides to become good, and allows Mario to ride on his ship when ever he wanted.
